HOME IMPROVEMENT TIME?

When is the best time to hire a contractor? There is no real good, or bad time. There are so many external factors that can hinder your decision to consider further investment into your home. The Real Estate market decline we are currently experiencing is a perfect example. The lower interest rates however, and the potential increased value your home will realize, may make this the best time. The problem is that the Home Improvement market follows the Real Estate market, which means that contractors are hurt'n for business right now!

That presents both opportunity AND risk for homeowners. Contractors that are established and diverse enough to ride out the poor economic times, may be willing to sharpen their pencil and give you more for your money. However, these poor economic times can take it's toll on even the most reputable contractor. That means that homeowners need to dig deep during their pre-hire screening process. Supplier Credit checks are usually the first line of defense in identifying contractors in trouble. If they can't pay their suppliers, they can't buy materials. What's worse? Your deposit will usually get absorbed into their debt within hours of receiving it! The beginning of the end!

ADVICE: Don't let the potential savings on the cost of your project blind you in making a hasty hiring decision. DO YOUR HOMEWORK now more than ever! Money (or the lack thereof) makes people do funny things - Especially if they don't have enough!
